Designing for Experiences in Education @Barcamp Bangalore 2014

Standard

Barcamp Bangalore is an open event focused around people, ideas and collaboration. It is an Unconference with quite an interesting execution. I took this as a chance to look back at what i had been doing in Education through Design and wanted to summarize my learnings.
The talk has images and videos involved which are not part of the slideshow. I have included one video for slide 12 about the innovation workshop.

This is one of the pedagogical experiment as a part of which we [ BrainSTARS ] are guiding a group of 4 final year IT students for the final project. This is to help bridge the gap that college education and the work involved in the real life jobs have.

I urge anyone reading to go through their blog atleast once. It will be great to see some discussion happening.

Design for Education

Aside

I am itching to write about this from so long. I don’t find myself ready yet. But what i will try is to write a very short account of things and stuff going on currently.

Designing for a very specific field like education seems very interesting. I have spent around 10 months doing this and i seem to like it.

The work involves coming up with quite a lot of new ideas. The in-house culture gives a lot of focus on research and has started to accept design as a valued counterpart. It’s different from working for Tinkerable where i used to spend a lot of time with children due to which the actual work on concept took a backseat at certain times. We are experimenting alot on new ideas which makes everyday quite interesting and unique.

I hopefully will write more and will update the blog more frequently. It’s been quite a while since i wrote about something i was working on which i frankly miss.

Fingers crossed!! Hoping for a good blogging season..

Challenge 1 : Hello my name is | Identity

Standard

Task – creation of identity for the designer himself.

Moral– Designing for oneself is not an easy task; for it needs a certain amount of detachment from oneself to see the attributes objectively, a certain level of pseudo-externalization is needed. Once hidden attributes just become visible. It’s like stepping back from the painting to see the whole picture together. Painful at a level, the task was still a good brush up of those rotting skills and above all an aid for self – realization.

Time : 30 mins

The selected motif is made from Initials J and S combined in the form of a musical symbol; a sweet accident i would say. Time was a constraint so i divided the whole process into six slots of five minutes each. A technique called Timeboxing. A lot of work still happened inside the head; still as much as i could pen down and scribble, i have.

Application of same as stationery is something that still needs to be worked upon. Till than, it will feature itself on the header of this blog.

I Will is a pledge, taken by the user to save energy and be more responsible. Fabricated under the course “Interactive Communication Project” the theme of the installation was “Energy Conservation”.
The project looked upon Human-Artefact interactions and used them in a playful manner.

The system tries to utilize the immense availability of no. of vehicles on any particular moment on the road. The inspiration is derived from the concepts of car sharing and usual tendency of taking lifts (which still most of the people don’t prefer to give).

The output is a system with availability of vehicles at any given moment with multiple possibilities to reach a destination. The benefits lie in the terms of “sharing the journey” rather than the vehicle, giving an advantage on social, financial and enviormental level.

The system can be modified with minor tweaks to suite different localities internationally. The system seems more suitable for developing nations.

In the rawest stage it makes it possible for almost anyone to use the system. As of now the system has it’s own drawback in terms of safety issues. Addition of any other constraints seems to make the system more complicated.

Direct Benefits

  • better commuting facilities
  • reduced traffic density
  • reduction of cost of travel
  • theoretically a 24/7 facility

Indirect Benefits

  • lesser pollution
  • decrease in new vehicles
  • catalyzes social interaction
  • invokes a sense of responsibility

I have huge doubts about how this system could be implemented or so as to how much will it be accepted by the people or what change it may trigger in the social context for that matter.

PS – btw this is the entry for a competition with theme “design for all“.
